Come & See the Story Quilts Made by Refugees in Idaho

Throughout the month of November, the North Logan Library will be hosting an exhibit by Artisans for Hope and the Idaho Commission on the Arts, titled THIS IS MY HOME NOW: NARRATIVE TEXTILES FROM IDAHO NEWCOMERS.

A collection of narratives and accompanying story quilts tells the stories of refugees who made Boise home after living through catastrophic times in their native countries.

Unfortunately, most of the actual quilts were destroyed in a fire. However, there are 12 quilts in the exhibit, plus some photographs of the quilts. They are all accompanied by the artisans’ history, detailing why and how they came to Idaho as refugees. Volunteers from Artisans For Hope worked with the refugees on how to express the essence of their stories in small story cloths. Their stories are horrific, their art beautiful.

The exhibit is distributed throughout the library.

You can find out more about this project here: http://www.artisansforhope.org/special-projects/

2 artisans will be coming to Logan for a number of events. Among them, there will be 2 community events that are free and open to the public:

  1. Friday, November 10, 10 a.m. at MY GIRLFRIEND’S QUILT SHOPPE (1115 N 200 E, Logan). This event will focus on how to tell your story by making story cloths.
  2. Friday, November 10, 7 p.m. at Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection (CRIC) (429 N Main, Logan). This event will focus on the refugees’ lives, their stories, how they ended up in Idaho, how the support from Artisans for Hope helped overcome trauma and facilitate communication between different cultures.

Authors & Illustrators Series Continues in May

After a little break, we are bringing to you an author AND an illustrator in the month of May.

May 10 — 7 to 9 p.m.
Author Nancy Bo Flood

Nancy Bo Flood

Nancy Bo Flood

As we are celebrating Utah Water Week, Nancy Bo Flood will be presenting her publication WATER RUNS THROUGH THIS BOOK.

“My work has always focused on children and young adults – as a researcher, counselor, teacher, parent, and now as a writer. I have conducted workshops on child abuse, learning disabilities, play therapy, and creative writing. My work and research has allowed me to live all over the world – in Malawi, Africa, Hawaii, Japan, the western Pacific, and, most recently, the Navajo Nation where I hike, ride my bike and attend local rodeos.”

Every attendee that evening will walk away with this free book.

  • A Green Earth qualified book
  • A Sigurd Olson Best Nature Writing Award Winner

This event is co-sponsored with iUtah.

May 12 – 7 p.m.
Illustrator Sherry Meidell

It was in Cache Valley where, as a young child, Sherry Meidell went to walk down a crunchy gravel road, enter a barn where the sunshine made dust sparkle and dance in the air and watch a Grandpa get the early morning milking done. Whenever she drives out of Sardine Canyon and catches the first glimpse of the valley, memories come flooding back.

You never know when those memories or the things she’s viewed in life make their way into illustrations for a children’s picture book. Meidell loves to tell stories with paint. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. And she illustrated the poem, The Centaur, of a famous Loganite, May Swenson.

She will be talking about the process of illustrating the picture book The Centaur by May Swenson, published by Utah State University Press. She will talk about the illustration process from the first reading of the manuscript to getting the new box of illustrated books.

She will also talk about the artistic life in general and how to keep the creative portion of your life active, how to overcome fear and put paint to paper. And while doing that, she will demonstrate some watercolor painting.

PLEASE COME AND JOIN US FOR BOTH OF THESE FANTASTIC EVENINGS! Light refreshments will be served. And raffle items will be given away.

Volunteers Sought

We are looking for volunteers who would like to help with book sorting and with book sales.

To start with, we are urgently looking for volunteers who are willing to rescue books from being shredded.

Once that’s done, we need hands to help sort the rescued books into categories for sales.

Then we will need folks who can help with the sales themselves. We are planning several for the coming year, the first one as soon as right around Valentine’s Day. So those books need to be rescued and sorted NOW!

If you are interested in any of these activities, which will be ongoing for the year, please sign up at JustServe.org. Put in our zip code (84341) and look for the Friends of the NLL logo. You will be able to choose from the various tasks and within those tasks various dates and time slots are available. Sign up for the time that’s convenient for you. Then we get notified that you have signed up.  The site keeps track of volunteers for each project and we can send relevant group or individual emails from there.

If you have any questions about this project, please get in touch with our President, Winona Perry.
