Cat in the Hat Party

As part of our Authors & Illustrators event, the Friends of the North Logan Library are hosting Kevin Hawkes, illustrator of IMAGINE THAT!—Random House’s new book, to be released this September—explaining many fascinating details about Dr. Seuss. Local Seuss fans will get a sneak peek at the book and discover behind-the-scenes insights.

Hawkes, and author Judy Sierra, were selected by Random House and the Geisel family to create a kid-friendly exploration of the early career of Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. Ted Geisel). They captured the familiar bouncy rhythm and colorful art associated with the Seuss books to reveal little-known facts about Dr. Seuss and his creative talents. Hawkes, whose parents reside in North Logan, Utah, will talk about his illustrating experience and share interesting tidbits from the book, as well as demonstrate how he navigates the process of creating his characters. As a bonus, Hawkes will also share another of his illustrated books coming out in August, Dogosaurus Rex.

This evening will be a hit with all ages. And it is FREE!

Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite hat, enjoy the coloring table and come and celebrate at the Library on July 17 at 7 p.m.

Authors & Illustrators Series Continues in May

After a little break, we are bringing to you an author AND an illustrator in the month of May.

May 10 — 7 to 9 p.m.
Author Nancy Bo Flood

Nancy Bo Flood

Nancy Bo Flood

As we are celebrating Utah Water Week, Nancy Bo Flood will be presenting her publication WATER RUNS THROUGH THIS BOOK.

“My work has always focused on children and young adults – as a researcher, counselor, teacher, parent, and now as a writer. I have conducted workshops on child abuse, learning disabilities, play therapy, and creative writing. My work and research has allowed me to live all over the world – in Malawi, Africa, Hawaii, Japan, the western Pacific, and, most recently, the Navajo Nation where I hike, ride my bike and attend local rodeos.”

Every attendee that evening will walk away with this free book.

  • A Green Earth qualified book
  • A Sigurd Olson Best Nature Writing Award Winner

This event is co-sponsored with iUtah.

May 12 – 7 p.m.
Illustrator Sherry Meidell

It was in Cache Valley where, as a young child, Sherry Meidell went to walk down a crunchy gravel road, enter a barn where the sunshine made dust sparkle and dance in the air and watch a Grandpa get the early morning milking done. Whenever she drives out of Sardine Canyon and catches the first glimpse of the valley, memories come flooding back.

You never know when those memories or the things she’s viewed in life make their way into illustrations for a children’s picture book. Meidell loves to tell stories with paint. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Utah Watercolor Society, and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. And she illustrated the poem, The Centaur, of a famous Loganite, May Swenson.

She will be talking about the process of illustrating the picture book The Centaur by May Swenson, published by Utah State University Press. She will talk about the illustration process from the first reading of the manuscript to getting the new box of illustrated books.

She will also talk about the artistic life in general and how to keep the creative portion of your life active, how to overcome fear and put paint to paper. And while doing that, she will demonstrate some watercolor painting.

PLEASE COME AND JOIN US FOR BOTH OF THESE FANTASTIC EVENINGS! Light refreshments will be served. And raffle items will be given away.

Volunteers Sought

We are looking for volunteers who would like to help with book sorting and with book sales.

To start with, we are urgently looking for volunteers who are willing to rescue books from being shredded.

Once that’s done, we need hands to help sort the rescued books into categories for sales.

Then we will need folks who can help with the sales themselves. We are planning several for the coming year, the first one as soon as right around Valentine’s Day. So those books need to be rescued and sorted NOW!

If you are interested in any of these activities, which will be ongoing for the year, please sign up at Put in our zip code (84341) and look for the Friends of the NLL logo. You will be able to choose from the various tasks and within those tasks various dates and time slots are available. Sign up for the time that’s convenient for you. Then we get notified that you have signed up.  The site keeps track of volunteers for each project and we can send relevant group or individual emails from there.

If you have any questions about this project, please get in touch with our President, Winona Perry.

Donations Welcome

Have you enjoyed this year’s 25th Street Market and the various entertainments we offered outdoors at the library, such as BIKES AND BOARDS, UP IN THE AIR, GET MOVIN’, and CULTUREFEST? Maybe you’ve attended one of our AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR evenings and you are hoping that we will continue these and other interesting programs at no cost to the community.

The Friends of the North Logan Library are a non-profit organization, and as such, we need your help!

We fund our activities with money from book and flower sales, membership fees, and donations. As we are coming up on Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, we ask that you consider making a year-end donation to the FRIENDS OF THE NORTH LOGAN LIBRARY.

Your donation is tax-deductible.

Please send checks to “Friends of the NL Library, 475 E 2500 N, North Logan UT 84341.”
